The Films That Caused Real-Life Marriages to Fail
Actors must put in a lot of time and effort to make a movie. Long filming schedules or scenarios might demand a lot of emotional labor from the actors. Despite being in a relationship off-camera, actors who portray a couple on-screen may fall in love with their co-stars.
There is a tendency for "Hollywood marriages" to have a shorter lifespan than those of us who aren't in the field because of the enticements, envy, and rumors that permeate the industry. For even the most stable of relationships, an on-screen romance may bring them to their knees. There is a risk that connections on the set might evolve into relationships that lead to divorce.
The Getaway (1972)
Before being cast in The Getaway, Ali MacGraw married The Getaway director/producer Robert Evans. They even had a child together. Despite this, MacGraw was smitten with her co-star, Steve McQueen, the "King of Cool." When asked about her relationship with McQueen, MacGraw characterized it as "chemical." However, MacGraw had an affair with McQueen during the filming of The Getaway. They divorced once the romance came to light. In 1973, she married McQueen, and their five-year marriage was short.
Titanic (1997)
Jack and Rose are now the only lovebirds of Titanic. Behind the scenes, a developing relationship was occurring amongst the cast and crew of James Cameron's ambitious film. Cameron began seeing Titanic actress Suzy Amis when the movie was filmed while he was married to his new wife, Linda Hamilton. Her character, Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton), is a treasure hunter and Rose's granddaughter who joins Brock in his quest to discover Rose's love past via her stories. Until the news of their romance surfaced, Cameron continued to visit Amis. Hamilton left Cameron after hearing this, and a few years later, Cameron &''' Amis were married. After all, the heart continues to beat.
Daredevil (2003)
Despite being a forgettable entry in the Marvel canon, Daredevil has been blamed for the dissolution of a marriage and an engagement of national renown. Ben Affleck was engaged to Jennifer Lopez, and Jennifer Garner married actor Ben Foley while the movie was shot. Daredevil's set provided a new Ben for Jennifer and a new Jennifer for Ben. Affleck and Garner's chemistry on-screen as Daredevil and Elektra carried over to their real lives. Actors swiftly ended their past relationships to have a relationship with one other. The couple wed in 2005 and remained together until their divorce in 2018 when they separated.
Cleopatra (1963)
Richard Burton was as well known for his acting prowess as his booze-fueled playboy persona and several affairs. "Cleopatra," the blockbuster movie starring Liz Taylor and Richard Burton, tapped Burton to play Marc Anthony. Burton and Taylor may have had plenty of time to get closer on the set because the film was notorious for costing a fortune and running well over schedule. One of the most scandalous marriages in Hollywood history was formed between Burton and Taylor after their affair broke up their marriages.
Days of Thunder (1990)
Tom Cruise was married to Mimi Rogers while Days of Thunder was filmed, and it is believed that she introduced him to Scientology. Scientology remained a part of Cruise's life, but his relationship with Rogers swiftly deteriorated as Days of Thunder began filming. A month into filming, Cruise and Nicole Kidman struck up a friendship, which led to Cruise's divorce from Rogers. After a brief relationship, Cruise and Kidman tied the knot later that year. Due to "irreconcilable issues," however, the two would break up in 2001.
To Have and To Have Not (1944)
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall met because of the movie To Have and To Have Not, one of the earliest examples of a movie ending a famous marriage. Mayo Methot was Bogart's wife at the time of the incident, but he was unhappy with the relationship. (The tabloids referred to the pair as the "battling Bogarts.") The classic love scenes between Bogart and Bacall sparked Bogart's decision to divorce Methot. Bogart and Bacall were married until Bogart died in 1957, despite their age gap of 25 years.
Mind Over Murder (2005)
This Lifetime TV movie swiftly ended Tori Spelling, Charlie Shanian, Sean MacDermott, and Mary Jo Eustace's marriages. When filming began, Spelling and MacDermott immediately began an affair that endured for the project's duration. Their marriages were re-examined after this. Spelling and MacDermott married each other a year after their divorces in 2006. After renewing their vows in 2010, the pair is still together.
The Misfits (1961)
Occasionally, work and love don't mix. Even though Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller's marriage had been fraught from the start, things reached a boiling point during the making of The Misfits. In the film, Monroe was allowed to show off her acting chops in a more serious role based on a short tale by Miller. Nevertheless, Monroe was not a fan of the screenplay, and Miller's many rewrites strained their relationship. After the film was finished, the two would divorce. The Misfits was Marilyn Monroe's final film role, and many consider it her best.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994)
In the 1990s, Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson were a British cinematic power couple. Despite their five-year marriage, Branagh couldn't ignore his feelings for Helena Bonham Carter, his co-star in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Branagh's romance with Thompson was made public, and Thompson divorced him immediately. Though it was a difficult experience, she has already gone on with her life. That's not something you can hang onto." I think. Pfft. It's meaningless." "I just don't have the energy." Years and years ago, Helena and I agreed on our differences.
Proof of Life (2000)
It wasn't looking good for Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid's marriage before the release of Proof of Life, but things have improved. Because Quaid had previously cheated on her, Ryan's on-set relationship with Russell Crowe was just retribution. Their on-screen connection was evident, but it was short-lived. When Ryan and Crowe's relationship ended, it ended almost as suddenly as it had begun. The affair was the final straw in Ryan and Quaid's turbulent marriage, which ended in divorce in 2001.
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
Clint Eastwood's wandering eye was well-known back in the day. However, his philandering on The Outlaw Josey Wales set is possibly the most well-known incident. While married to Maggie Johnson, Eastwood fell in love with Sondra Locke, his on-screen partner. Despite Eastwood's married status, their not-so-secret romance ended with them moving in together. However, Locke's marriage to the artist Gordon Anderson was completely platonic. The Outlaw Josey Wales dissolved Eastwood and Johnson's marriage, but Locke's marriage to Anderson would last the remainder of her life.
Mr and Mrs Smith (2005)
Known as the film that broke up Hollywood power couple Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Mr and Mrs Smith will always be remembered. Pitt and co-star Angelina Jolie, who play a married couple who double as assassins in the action film, had an electric connection on set. They had been married for five years at the time of Jolie's arrival, and it was clear that her arrival did not assist their relationship. Pitt and Jolie said they met on site and fell in love and that there was no infidelity between them at the time. Both Aniston and Jolie's supporters were divided among the public. "Brangelina" was born due to the affair between Pitt and Aniston.
The Last Face
Everything about The Last Face was a tragedy. This Sean Penn-directed film was widely derided by film reviewers and booed at shows. To make matters worse, Charlize Theron and Sean Penn broke up because of the film. In 2014, the two fell in love and began dating. Filming began in 2015. After filming, the couple split up, but they had to market the movie together in interviews and press junkets! That's a little weird.
Dream House
In addition to Darren Aronofsky, who has already been mentioned on this list, the director was linked to Jennifer Weisz before he met Jennifer Lawrence. They were together for nine years, had a kid, and even worked on a film, "The Fountain." So, what was the final straw in their romance? Weisz was introduced to Daniel Craig in the horror film Dream House. The co-stars got along well and decided they wanted to be more than just buddies once they finished filming. In 2011, they were married.
Nymphomaniac
When it comes to his acting profession, Shia LaBeouf is known to take nothing less than absolute dedication. Nymphomaniac, Lars Von Trier's film about a guy obsessed with women, was undoubtedly a catalyst for the breakup of his long-term relationship with Karolyn Pho. He got to know the film's debutant, English actress Mia Goth. In 2016, they tied the knot in Las Vegas after their on-screen relationship blossomed into a real-life romance. When Shia LaBeouf was spotted with actress Margaret Qualley later that year, they called it quits.
Daredevil
Daredevil, the superhero adaption, ended two relationships. Affleck was engaged to Jennifer Lopez, while Garner married Scott Foley, a co-star on the show Alias. Even a layperson may deduce what occurred next. As a result of their on-set antics, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner began seeing one other after their respective marriages fell apart. From 2004 through 2018, Ben and his second wife, Bennifer, had a child.
The Misfits
Even though she is remembered as one of the world's most beautiful women, actress Marilyn Monroe had a tragic personal life. Acting in The Misfits, her final picture and the beginning of the end of her marriage, brought a fresh melancholy to her life. She and Arthur Miller had been married, but they always had affairs. Even Miller's mistress had moved into the house, despite Monroe's drug problems!
To Have and Have Not
It was said that Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, aka 'Bogey and Bacall,' were a Hollywood power couple. Their relationship, though, had its share of difficulties. While filming To Have and Have Not, they were enamored, although Bogart was already married. Bacall, a model and actress, was 18 years old when she fell in love with Bogart. His marriage to problematic actress Mayo Methot ended when he divorced her.
Stage Beauty
Despite having been together for seven years, Billy Crudup and Mary-Louise Parker's romance ended after the release of one film. When Crudup dumped Parker for actress Claire Danes, she was seven months into her pregnancy with Crudup's child. They became acquainted during the production of Stage Beauty, a play based on Shakespeare. The death of Crudup's father grieved Parker, but she decided to name her baby William in honor of him. Dear Mr. You is Parker's heartfelt memoir about their breakup.
Mind Over Murder
An immediate bond is impossible to deny. When Tori Spelling met Dean McDermott here on the set of Mind Over Murder, that's what occurred. Throughout the years, their rollercoaster love has risen and fallen due to McDermott's infidelity. Understandably, Spelling wouldn't want another relationship to dissolve after ending her marriage to Charlie Shanian for McDermott.
Pushing Tin
They were engaged when Laura Dern and Billy Bob Thornton began dating in 1997 and remained together until 1999. When Thornton featured in Pushing Tin, a comedy-drama starring Angelina Jolie, their relationship went apart. In the end, Billy Bob and Dern got along so well that they decided to call off their wedding. To make matters worse, Dern heard reports about Thornton and Jolie's alleged elopement and was shocked to learn that their engagement had been called off. I had no idea what to expect.
"Terminator 2: Judgment Day"
When "Ahnold" fought a liquid metal killer in the "Terminator 2" sequel, it's hard to believe it's been 30 years (Robert Patrick). Other drama played out behind the scenes, as director James Cameron was on the verge of divorcing Kathryn Bigelow, his co-director, in favor of "T2" actress Linda Hamilton, whom he would later marry. Affectionate despite Bigelow's adultery, Cameron and Bigelow sat together for the 2009 best picture award ceremony when Cameron's "Avatar" was up for a nomination and won against Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker."
